Parental Alientation System (PAS)?

Remember about a year ago when Alec Baldwin was caught cussing out his daughter over the phone? Well now it has been attributed to a fairly new disorder called 'Parental Alienation Syndrome'. What is this you ask?

What is Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS)?
This is the definition of PAS as described by R.A. Gardner who discovered the syndrome and has become an expert in dealing with the issue.

Gardner's definition of PAS is: "The parental alienation syndrome (PAS) is a disorder that arises primarily in the context of child-custody disputes. Its primary manifestation is the child's campaign of denigration against a parent, a campaign that has no justification. It results from the combination of a programming (brainwashing) parent's indoctrinations and the child's own contributions to the vilification of the target parent."

(Excerpted from: Gardner, R.A. (1998). The Parental Alienation Syndrome, Second Edition, Cresskill, NJ: Creative Therapeutics, Inc.)

Basically, this means that through verbal and non verbal thoughts, actions and mannerisms, a child is emotionally abused (brainwashed) into thinking the other parent is the enemy. This ranges from bad mouthing the other parent infront of the children, to withholding visits, to pre-arranging the activities for the children while visiting with the other parent.

Don't you find this reaching too much for an excuse? Hasn't this been around since the dawn of time? I would take a bet that anyone and everyone that has been through a divorce, with children, has been plagued with PAS. Wouldn't this 'syndrome' apply to many other areas of our lives? What about when you are fired? You say things about the company/boss. Wouldn't this be a type of brainwashing? Wouldn't letting others know the 'bad' things about the company and thus causing people to have negative thoughts be considered brainwashing? What if you purchase a product and don't like it? You then tell someone about it. Aren't we brainwashing the other person about the product? Right now, my 18yo son is having issues with his best friend (they are no longer friends). Since they are both talking bad about each other - does this qualify as some sort of syndrome and now they both need help? This happens in everyday life all the time.

I have always thought that a syndrome was something more of a medical condition - like Down Syndrome. So I looked up the definition and here is what I found:

1. Pathology, Psychiatry. a group of symptoms that together are characteristic of a specific disorder, disease, or the like.
2. a group of related or coincident things, events, actions, etc.
3. the pattern of symptoms that characterize or indicate a particular social condition.
4. a predictable, characteristic pattern of behavior, action, etc., that tends to occur under certain circumstances

It is amazing the things they can come up with to justify mad-mouthing others. I don't think that feeling bad about a situation causes the right to be called a syndrome. How is it treated? What do you think?

"A Mother's Promise" by Evenflo

“A Mother’s Promise” is a Facebook community supported by Evenflo, and it’s focused on bringing moms together in a quest to keep children safe while on the road. With so many people traveling for the holidays, it seems like the perfect time to raise awareness. Supporting “A Mother’s Promise” is free, super simple, and only takes a moment.

If you already have a Facebook account, just visit “A Mother’s Promise,” and post on the Wall, pledging to your children to do everything within your power to protect them. (There’s also a really cool video of other moms making their individual promises – it definitely made me a little teary!) If you don’t have a Facebook account yet, now’s the time! Once you’re a member, just search for “A Mother’s Promise” and post your promise.

Then, invite all your friends and family – other moms, dads, grandparents, and neighbors inside and outside the Facebook community – to do the same.

Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among children in the U.S., but together, we can make a difference.

Painterly Creations Product Review

Painterly Creations - Personalized Name Train

Etsy has so many great creators. Here is one of my favorties!

About Painterly Creations:
All of Painterly Creations items are made entirely out of wood which Christel paints herself with paints and finishes that are water based, child-safe and US made.

Product Review:
I received a personalized name train (with my son's name - Mitchell). This personalized train will help teach your child to spell their name. The train is also a fun toy that you child can pull around. This train does contain magnets which connect the letter cars. So make sure your child is old enough to play with it. This train would wonderful to to display in any little boy's room until they could play with it responsibly. Included in the price is the locomotive. The entire train is painted in primary colors with a high gloss finish. Each letter is approximately 2 ¼ “ long, 2 ½” high and 1 ½” wide and made of heavy hardwood made to last. Christel is very detailed oriented with her items. Mitchell and his two sisters have been playing with this train constantly and it has dropped many times. It still looks great. Christel takes great care in making sure that her painting stays looking good even through my little tornados.

Shipping was quick and packaging is professional. Christel is quick to respond and is a pleasure to work with. If you are looking something unique to give as a gift, especially a baby shower, then check out Painterly Creations.

Dusting with Pledge® leaves surfaces with no waxy buildup. Pledge® Natural Beauty removes up to 84% of allergens from dust mites and pet dander that is in dust.

I had always believed that Pledge was ONLY for wood. To my surprise it can also be used to add a great clean shine to Stainless Steel, Leather, Marble and Granite. Pledge doesn't leave a grimy build up like some other cleaners can. My mother and grandmother both used Pledge and I can now see why.

'Queen of the Road' Book Review

Queeen of the Road is a unique collection of events about one woman's trip across country with her husband, dog and two cats in a bus of a motorhome.

From the book: “A pampered Long Island princess hits the road in a converted bus with her wilderness-loving husband, travels the country for one year, and brings it all hilariously to life in this offbeat and romantic memoir.

Doreen and Tim are married psychiatrists with a twist: She’s a self-proclaimed Long Island princess, grouchy couch potato, and shoe addict. He’s an affable, though driven, outdoorsman. When Tim suggests “chucking it all” to travel cross-country in a converted bus, Doreen asks, “Why can’t you be like a normal husband in a midlife crisis and have an affair or buy a Corvette?” But she soon shocks them both, agreeing to set forth with their sixty-pound dog, two querulous cats—and no agenda—in a 340-square-foot bus.

Queen of the Road is Doreen’s offbeat and romantic tale about refusing to settle; about choosing the unconventional road with all the misadventures it brings (fire, flood, armed robbery, and finding themselves in a nudist RV park, to name just a few). The marvelous places they visit and delightful people they encounter have a life-changing effect on all the travelers, as Doreen grows to appreciate the simple life, Tim mellows, and even the pets pull together. Best of all, readers get to go along for the ride through forty-seven states in this often hilarious and always entertaining memoir, in which a boisterous marriage of polar opposites becomes stronger than ever.”

Normally, this is not my type of book to read. I am one who likes murder mysteries or suspens thrillers. However, this book really made me laugh and cry (tears fo joy). The book is very easy to read and without a doubt you will get sucked into the story. However, every now and then thoughts will jump from one to another. This can be a bit confusing but you will not get lost. There is the occasional use of profanity but it doesn't distract from the story. I love how you learn a little history as well. Doreen and I defintely see eye-to-eye regarding spiders, lol. I actually think it would be fun to take a long road trip in a hug bus with all the amenities.

Overall, I give Queen of the Road two thumbs up!

Cushy Closer Review and Giveaway! CLOSED!

Photobucket

Baby Urbana - Cushy Closer - Giveaway
Prize: $25 gift certificate

Cushy Closers allow quiet entry and exit while checking on sleeping children
Prevents young children from being locked in (bathrooms, bedrooms, etc.)
Snug fit helps muffle door sounds (slamming, rattling, closing)
Helps with noisy children and husbands, too!

It doesn't matter how much noise a child can sleep through, there's something about the click of a doorknob or rattling of a door that can break through the deepest sleep. Once the Cushy Closer is attached, the door can be opened and closed, completely and quietly, without turning the knob or handle. The snug fit means no rattling or slamming when a blast of air hits the door. Want to thwart the efforts of a toddler trying to lock him or herself in the bathroom or bedroom? Do you have a noisy husband or older children? What other doors may need a Cushy Closer? They're also portable for visits to friends or grandma's or when traveling. As their sister-in-law says, "It's the best little product you never knew you needed." If nothing else, it sure beats putting a sock or rag in the door!

Photobucket

Product Review:
Gail sent me a Cushy Closer to test out. They are wonderful! I have it on the door in my girls room (they are 3 and 5). Prior to putting the Cushy Closer on their door here is what would happen - One would wake up and when leaving the room they closed the door (or should I say slammed) and then the other would wake up. After Cushy Closer (I think you get the picture) the one still sleeping stayed sleeping. It is a wonderful product. Upon first seeing it I thought this puffy thing will never fit but it does. There are a ton of designs to choose from and Gail is awesome to work with. I honestly could not find any flaws to report. Definitely two thumbs up.

Please be aware of new laws regarding sale of items for children! (Nationally)

Most of you will be unaware of the laws currently in affect that will be enforced begining in February, 2009. These laws include clothing, toys, blankets, bibs, beds - basically *anything* that comes in contact with children ages 12 and under. You will no longer be able to sell children's items without having testing for lead, phalates and flammability. To do so will be a felony. Donations to places such as the Salvation Army, etc, will - as it stands - more than likely not be allowed.

Additionally, how this affects YOU as a parent. Because of the testing requirements, many companies will be closing their doors. There will be a reduction in services and products available. The companies that do survive this law and are able to afford the testing, will be forced to raise their pricing to cover the testing costs. As it stands, it is looking to cost approximately $500 per unit. If a company has a number of different items available, they have to test each different unit. Say I make a shirt with long sleeves, and one with short sleeves, and another with a bow on the front. Each shirt HAS to be tested seperately, according the new CPSIA laws. This new law is going to put MANY MANY MANY small business completely out of business. This is going to cause a greater impact on our current recession, as those individuals and businesses who rely on the sales of their product, will now be searching for ways to survive - along with you, me and the rest of the country...then add to the fact that product pricing will then increase. It's all a vicious cycle - all because our country was lacking laws for importing dangerous toys. Please do your homework and read up on the CPSIA laws and how they will affect you as the consumer. Contact your congressman/woman and Senator and ask them to look into the CPSIA and see for themselves the magnitude of devastation this is going to have nation-wide.

Something Fun!

Ok, A follow blogger had this on her site and asked for us to pass it along. It is a bit of fun and we all know how we could use a little fun right now. This is weird math but try it. It worked for me! Let me know if it works for you. I don't know how it does it but it's very interesting. Try it!
I had to grab a calculator.
YOUR AGE BY EATING OUT
Don't tell me your age; you probably would tell a falsehood anyway-but your waiter may know!
YOUR AGE BY DINER & RESTAURANT MATH
DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!
It takes less than a minute. Work this out as you read .
Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!
This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun.
1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to go out to eat.
(more than once but less than 10)
2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)
3. Add 5
4. Multiply it by 50
5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1758...
If you haven't, add 1757.
6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.
You should have a three digit number
The first digit of this was your original number. (I.e., How many times you want to go out to restaurants in a week.)
The next two numbers are YOUR AGE ! (Oh YES, it is!)

THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2008) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS!!!
How weird is that????

Dyson Domestic Diva (Jan Sign-ups) at Momdot!

Are you a mom blogger? Do you want to review the DC 25 Animal for Dyson? The day I got a Dyson, my life changed for the better. With endless pets in our home, we had a constant need to keep hair off the floors, couches, bedrooms, and into a life we were not embarrassed to live. Worse, our vacuums kept breaking year after year and replacing was costly and expensive.

After recommendations from friends, I settled on a Dyson and never looked back. Recently MomDot.com and Dyson created a partnership for a once in a lifetime opportunity for moms to really get down and dirty with Dysons newest DC 25 Rollarball Animal vacuum, and let you have a chance to tell the world what YOU think.
Every 2 weeks from now till April, we are going to be picking a new mom to spend a full two weeks with our Dyson and then come on as a Dyson Domestic Diva and give everyone the lowdown on it. Comparing it to your current household cleaning, your vacuum that you use on a daily basis, the all around ins and outs of how you feel about the Dyson after spending 2 weeks with it in your home. You will be able to blog during your experience from set up to the day it leaves, posting pictures, videos and sharing your experience with the world.
Please go to Dyson Domestic Divas to see the progress on the new site, which should be fully up and running by January 1st!

How do I get involved?
Look for signups! Every two weeks we will run a sign up and announce the newest Dyson Domestic Diva. We will get your shipping info and get a Dyson to your house ASAP. These will be rolling sign ups, so please come back and let us know your still interested and why. Persistence DOES pay off. We will notice if you are interactive on our blog and with the other Dyson Domestic Divas, leaving comments, talking about the site to others, and it shows us you really want to test the Dyson for yourself.

How are you choosing who gets to use it?
We are going to look for someone who has a genuine need for the Dyson. Do you have a lot of pets? Crazy allergies? A terrible vacuum? Tell us about it! We do ask that you do NOT own a Dyson, nor have ever owned one. We want to get reviews from brand new non owners.

Am I required to post on the Dyson Domestic Diva site?
Yes! We are essentially a moms panel and you are signing up to review this product. You don’t need to blog daily as you are using the Dyson, but are welcome to. We definitely want your first and last impressions, including pictures and videos if you have them (videos not required). You will receive a log in to the Dyson blog and be able to blog about your excitement, impressions, and more. We will help you if you do not know the blog format we use (wordpress).

Can I review this on my own site as well?
Yes, of course. And ask your readers to come watch your progress right on Domestic Divas!

Will I have to pay for shipping?
NO! Dyson will cover the shipping to your house and on to the next person. You just need to clean!

How long will I have it?
2 weeks. We felt this was a great time to really get to know your vacuum and see results.

Will I get to keep it?
Sadly, no. This one is on a very important trip around the blogosphere. But that doesn’t mean you wont see rewards in the future for your participation. Just imagine how clean your house will be and how convinced your husband will be to let you get one after you have proven to him how great it is! Plus, you get to add Dyson Moms Panel to your bloggy press…and how cool is THAT.

APPLICATIONS NOW

To begin, we need two moms to kick off the Dyson Domestic Diva program with us in January 09! So go ahead and put your sign ups below. Let us know who you are, what blog you are a part of, and why you desperately need to test out this Dyson for a few weeks. We are going to pick our first two mommies before January 1st. We do give brownie points if you are a momdot visitor and if you find a creative way to spread the program back on your blog, so tell us about it if you do. Remember, if your not picked for the first round, its going on till April, so every two weeks, you have a chance to be a part of the crew.

We are looking for creative, fun bloggers who are excited and want to be a part of this very special Dyson Review Crew! Please leave info below for January sign up.

Aloha Friday!

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday.

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So Kailani thought that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, she’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response. If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!
